Smartphone Stories are fun, interactive short workshops that give participants the skills and knowledge to be able to develop and make their own films, and tell their own stories, using a mobile phone to shoot and edit.
Led by expert facilitators Matt and Jess we have already delivered workshops in more than 50 locations to more than 500 people including community settings, schools and organisations. This included a two-year project funded by VicHealth Everyday Creative Partnerships (2020-2022), delivered to more than 400 people across Victoria in partnership with 30 local Councils, and lead Council City of Port Phillip & Cinespace Inc.
We’ve run workshops for whole-of-community as well as tailored or community workshops for:
Seniors
Youth & Schools
People with a disability
First Nations groups
LGBTQI groups
We’ve also delivered short workshops to marketing teams within businesses.
A smartphone story might be a short drama or comedy film, a short documentary, an experimental film, a music video or a vlog, social media content, or something else. A story can easily be made by one person, or by a team of people.
Stories made by participants can be shared in community screenings, festivals, online or on social media, broadcast on community television and more.
Through the Smartphone Stories workshops, everybody’s stories can be shared, experiences valued, and aspirations enabled.
Outcomes: During this introductory workshop participants learn the skills to produce, write, direct and edit their own 1-minute narration-based short film made entirely on a mobile phone.
Learn about the basics of filming with a smartphone.
Why use a smartphone to make a film?
Elements that make up a film
Things to do before you shoot
Using your phone's camera
Using natural lighting to get a nice image
How to record usable location sound
We then break into small groups to start filming your personal story using an interview or narration set up, inspired by the 60 Second Docs format. (Participants are still free to choose a different format if they prefer).
Finally, we will set you off with a homework task to film the rest of your one-minute digital story!
Participants can bring in their own footage, photos and clips from home to use as overlay in their digital story, and we'll begin putting your film together, learning the basic skills of editing.
Topics covered in Day Two include:
Using editing apps such as Adobe Premiere Rush, iMovie or Capcut (free versions available)
Editing picture
Editing sound
Adding titles and credits, and finishing off your film
Sharing to platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and Tik Tok
We'll screen and provide feedback on your films as a group, and then discuss your own original ideas that you will start to make after the end of the workshop.

Make a short film as a group
Over 72 hours, script, rehearse, plan and make an original 3 minute short film as a group following more traditional film processes with 'cast and crew roles'.
Collaboratively devise and script a short film using available people and resources. Participants can bring an idea to this program (along with concept, tonal or reference ideas, and resources like locations, actors or subjects) to pitch to the group, however only one idea can be made. The facilitator will help navigate this selection based on what the group would like to do, but also take into consideration what is practical and possible to shoot locally within one day.
Learn how to use professional smartphone filmmaking tools, phone apps, and accessories like gimbals, drones, tripods, lighting, audio equipment, jib and dolly
Shoot the short film, with participants taking on assigned crew roles
Edit and complete the short film project, involves group based approach observing and participating in the edit with the facilitator at the controls. Participants can usually also take footage home to practice editing after this day as well.
At the end of the day, the finished project is screened for the group, and can then be submitted to short film festivals.
Limited* on-call remote support is offered individually to participants after workshops to polish off a workshop film, or if you are endeavouring to follow up with an original short smartphone story idea on your own. *subject to availability, limits apply.
Your film is made to be seen!
We can also offer advice after the workshop on running a live public screening event to screen your film back to your community, and most films are also invited to be showcased on the Smartphone Stories YouTube channel.
You also own your completed film to submit to other festivals (see 'filmfreeway' for film festival submissions, or online platforms such as web sites or social media, or community broadcasting.
